new beginnings · purification · fresh start · potential
Upright
A new shoot is pushing through the soil, and it carries all the promise of the forest within it. This is the spark of something — a project, a path, a way of being. Tend it gently. Birch is the tree of beginnings, and beginnings ask for courage.
Reversed
The seed is there, but something is blocking the light. Perhaps you are overthinking the planting, or the soil needs clearing first. Do the small, necessary work before expecting growth.
Irish lore
Birch (Beith) is the first letter of the Ogham alphabet and the first tree to colonise bare ground after fire or ice. In Irish tradition, birch besoms were used to sweep away the old year and purify the threshold.
