wisdom · creativity · inspiration · the nuts of knowledge
Upright
The nine hazels of wisdom drop their nuts into the well of knowledge, and the salmon eats them. You are close to a deep understanding — something is clicking into place. Trust the creative impulse that rises now. This is imbas, the fire of inspiration, and it has chosen you.
Reversed
Wisdom is near, but you may be grasping for it instead of letting it come. The hazelnuts fall in their own time — you cannot shake the tree of knowledge. Be still, be receptive, and stop trying to be clever. Let yourself be wise instead.
Irish lore
Hazel (Coll) was the tree of wisdom and poetry. The nine hazel trees at the Well of Wisdom dropped their nuts into the water, where the Salmon of Knowledge ate them and gained all the world's understanding. Hazel rods were used for divination and for settling disputes.
