Nine of Wells

reflection · truth · self-knowledge · clarity

Upright

The lake is still, and what it shows you is the truth — your truth, unadorned and undeniable. Look into the mirror of the water and see yourself as you are. This is not judgment; it is clarity. You are more beautiful and more flawed than you imagined, and both are fine.

Reversed

You are avoiding your own reflection, or the image you see is distorted by fear or vanity. The lake mirror cannot lie, but a troubled mind can refuse to see what it shows. Be still. Let the water settle. Then look again.

Irish lore

Still lakes in Irish tradition were places of vision and truth — disturbing a lake's surface was considered unlucky. The phrase "as clear as a lake" meant undeniable truth. Warriors and poets would gaze into still water to see their true selves before a great undertaking.
