loyalty · the old wild · grief · what is lost
Upright
The wolf is gone from Ireland, but its howl still echoes in the place-names and the stories. Some things are lost but not forgotten, and their absence shapes the landscape as much as their presence did. Honour what is gone. Let your loyalty to the old wild things make you fierce in protecting what remains.
Reversed
You are grieving something that cannot return, and the grief has become a howl without end. The wolf mourns, but it also hunts, plays, and raises its young. You cannot live in loss forever. Carry the memory forward, but walk with the living.
Irish lore
The wolf (Mac Tíre, "son of the land") was native to Ireland until the last one was killed in the 18th century. Wolves were woven through Irish law, legend, and place-names. The loss of the wolf changed the Irish landscape forever — an absence that still haunts the hills.
