play · skill in water · adaptability · joy in the work
Upright
The otter fishes not just for food but for the fun of it — sliding down banks, tumbling in rapids, making a game of survival. Bring that energy to your work now. Skill and play are not opposites; they are partners. The otter catches more fish than the heron because it enjoys the catching.
Reversed
You have forgotten how to play, or you are all play and no purpose. The otter is joyful, but it is also a fierce and efficient hunter. If the fun has drained from your work, find it again. If the work has drained from your fun, get serious.
Irish lore
The otter (Dobharchú) held a special place in Irish lore. St. Kevin of Glendalough was said to have been fed by an otter during his hermitage. The dobharchú was also a fearsome water creature in some tales — playful but wild, never fully tame.
