The Shadow

the shadow self · bondage · fear · the Fomorians · what lurks beneath

Upright

Something in the dark has your attention, and it may have more hold on you than you would like to admit. Look at it clearly — fear, desire, old wounds. The shadow only has power over you while you refuse to face it.

Reversed

You are beginning to see what has been holding you, and the chains are looser than you thought. The shadow does not vanish — it simply stops running the show once you turn and look it in the eye.

Irish lore

The Fomorians were the dark, chaotic forces in Irish mythology — beings of the deep sea and the underworld who opposed the Tuatha Dé Danann. They represent not evil but the necessary shadow, the forces of entropy and darkness that exist in balance with the light. Balor of the Evil Eye was their most fearsome king.
