emotional power · authority · cycles of feeling · the pull of the deep
Upright
The tide obeys the moon and nothing else. You are in command of deep emotional forces now — not by controlling them, but by understanding their rhythm. High tide, low tide, the pull and the release. Use this power wisely, for it shapes the very shore.
Reversed
Your emotions are running at high tide with no sign of retreat, or the tide has gone so far out that everything feels exposed and dry. Neither extreme is permanent. Trust the cycle. What recedes will return, and what floods will drain.
Irish lore
The tides of the Irish coast were governed by Manannán mac Lir and watched by every coastal community with respect bordering on reverence. The three great waves of Ireland — Tonn Clídna, Tonn Tuaithe, and Tonn Rudraige — were said to roar when a high king died, the sea itself mourning.
